Chapter #74
“Emphasis on the Color of the Container in an Ikebana Arrangement”
Presented by: Susan Cano - Sogetsu School
Susan said that Ikebana is her passion, her life, and it keeps her “sane”. "The essence of ikebana lies in the relationship between flowers and the container. By focusing on the container to be used, new ideas of composition may come to mind."
When we do an arrangement we normally think of the materials first, especially for new students. Some schools just use neutral colors. Sometimes we do arrangements thinking of a container first. The exercise was to show how to think of a container and its color first and then use materials to enhance the arrangement.
For the program, Susan made several compositions with color in the same tonal range and colors in contrast to the color of the container.
A ‘Friendship Through Flowers’ workshop followed which was open to members and non-members. Each participant supplied their own container and materials.
